Hate-crime charge

Detroit Tigers left fielder Delmon Young apologized to his team and fans Friday, just before getting arraigned on a hate-crime harassment charge for a fight at his hotel during which police say he yelled anti-Semitic epithets.

Young posted a $5,000 bond at a brief hearing in Manhattan court and was released less than an hour before the Tigers’ game against the Yankees. If convicted, he could face up to a year in jail.

Walden out of closer’s role

Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia says Jordan Walden has been moved out of the closer’s role and will be replaced by Scott Downs. Scioscia said Walden will be used earlier in games but wasn’t specific about his role.

Skowron, 81, dies

Moose Skowron, a five-time World Series champion and one of only two players to hit three home runs in Game 7s, died Friday of congestive heart failure in Arlington Heights, Ill. He was 81. Skowron helped the New York Yankees win four titles in the 1950s and 1960s.

Injuries

The Chicago White Sox placed reliever Jesse Crain on the 15-day DL because of a strained left oblique. … The Houston Astros placed right-hander Kyle Weiland on the 15-day DL with an injury to his throwing shoulder.
