Saturday’s American League results

Blue Jays 5, Tigers 1 — Edwin Encarnacion, Colby Rasmus and Yunel Escobar homered off Detroit newcomer Anibal Sanchez to lead the host Toronto Blue Jays. The Tigers have lost three in a row and four out of five after a five-game winning streak that briefly lifted them into first place in the AL Central. Sanchez (5-8) lost to Toronto for the second time this season.

Mariners 4, Royals 3 — Kevin Millwood pitched effectively into the seventh inning, and Jesus Montero hit a two-run homer to lift the host Seattle Mariners.

Red Sox 8, Yankees 6 — Curtis Granderson misplayed Peter Ciriaco’s ninth-inning flyball into a go-ahead triple, and the Boston Red Sox beat the host New York Yankees after Mark Teixeira had tied the score with a two-run homer off nemesis Vicente Padilla. Down 6-1, the Yankees closed in the fifth on Jayson Nix’s two-run homer off Jon Lester and Derek Jeter’s RBI grounder.

Athletics 6, Orioles 1 — Yoenis Cespedes and Chris Carter hit two-run homers to back an effective pitching performance by Bartolo Colon (7-8), and the visiting Oakland Athletics recorded their ninth win in 10 games. Jemile Weeks had three hits and scored twice for the surging A’s, who are 18-3 (.857) this month.

White Sox 5, Rangers 2 — Adam Dunn hit his 31st home run, Philip Humber pitched six solid innings and the visiting Chicago White Sox won their fifth in a row. Paul Konerko added a two-run homer for Chicago.

Saturday’s National League results

Cubs 3, Cardinals 2 — Pinch-hitter Reed Johnson drove in the go-ahead run with a bunt single in the seventh inning and the host Chicago Cubs held on to win. Johnson caught the Cardinals by surprise when he squared up on the first pitch with runners on first and third and two out. His bunt fell perfectly between reliever Brian Fuentes and third baseman Matt Carpenter.

Dodgers 10, Giants 0 — Matt Kemp homered among his four hits and drove in four runs, Chad Billingsley took a two-hitter into the eighth and the Los Angeles Dodgers routed the host San Francisco Giants. Hanley Ramirez had three RBI to help the Dodgers pull within a game of the NL West-leading Giants.

Braves 2, Phillies 1 — Mike Minor struck out nine and combined with Craig Kimbrel on a four-hitter and Jason Heyward had two hits and drove in a run to lift the host Atlanta Braves.

Marlins 4, Padres 2 — Jose Reyes hit a two-run homer and Nathan Eovaldi won his debut for the host Miami Marlins. Justin Ruggiano also went deep and Steve Cishek earned his fourth save for the Marlins.

Nationals 4, Brewers 1 — Wisconsin-native Jordan Zimmerman pitched his first game against the host Milwaukee Brewers and his teammates hit three home runs. Zimmerman (8-6) struck out six and gave up five hits in six innings. Tyler Clippard earned his 19th save.

Pirates 4, Astros 3 — Rod Barajas’ single to shallow left with two out in the top of the eighth drove in Andrew McCutchen to break a 3-all tie and the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates held on for comeback victory. The Pirates’ bullpen allowed one hit over the last three innings.

Reds 9, Rockies 7 — Brandon Phillips’ two-run double capped a four-run rally in the fifth inning that rallied the visiting Cincinnati Reds from a 4-3 deficit.

Diamondbacks 6, Mets 3 — Miguel Montero hit a two-run homer to spark a three-run rally in the fourth inning that powered the host Arizona Diamondbacks.
