Saturday’s American League results

Twins 6, Royals 2 — Kyle Gibson pitched six solid innings in his major league debut, and Trevor Plouffe homered to help the host Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals. Gibson (1-0) allowed two runs and eight hits, and he struck out five.

Angels 7, Astros 2 — Joe Blanton pitched seven sharp innings, and Howie Kendrick and Chris Iannetta both homered to power the visiting Los Angeles Angels. Alberto Callaspo and Erick Aybar drove in two runs apiece in a big fourth inning to help Los Angeles to its fifth win in a row. Blanton (2-10) tied season lows with three hits and two runs.

Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 2 — Jose Bautista hit a pair of long homers over the Green Monster, starting with the 200th of his career and following with a tiebreaking, two-run drive in the eighth to lift the Toronto Blue Jays. Bautista put Toronto up 2-0 with a solo homer in the sixth. Bautista followed Jose Reyes’ leadoff single in the eighth with a drive off the base of a light-tower in left-center.

Orioles 11, Yankees 3 — Chris Davis homered twice to raise his major league-leading total to 30, and the host Baltimore Orioles extended New York’s losing streak to four games. Davis hit a three-run drive in the first inning and added a two-run shot in the sixth.

Rays 4, Tigers 3 — Yunel Escobar had an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Tampa Bay Rays rallied to win. James Loney had a one-out single off Bruce Rondon (0-1). Pinch-runner Sam Fuld went to second on Wil Myers’ single, and after Luke Scott struck out, both runners advanced on a wild pitch.

Saturday’s National League results

Mets 5, Nationals 1 — Dillon Gee beat Washington for the third time this year and the host New York Mets scored the go-ahead run when third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and shortstop Ian Desmond made errors on the same play. Daniel Murphy had three hits for the Mets. Gee (6-7) held Washington to a run in six innings.

Rockies 2, Giants 1 — Nolan Arenado hit a game-ending single with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the host Colorado Rockies over the San Francisco Giants, losers of six in a row for the first time in three years. Michael Cuddyer singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 26 games.

Braves 11, Diamondbacks 5 — Jason Heyward hit a tying RBI double and Andrelton Simmons scored the go-ahead run on the same play in a seven-run eighth inning to enable the host Atlanta Braves to rally for their 23rd comeback victory, tops in the National League.

Marlins 7, Padres 1 — Jacob Turner pitched a seven-hitter for his first complete game in 19 career starts and to help the host Miami Marlins record their first complete game this year.

Pirates 2, Brewers 1 — Pedro Alvarez and Garrett Jones each homered and Francisco Liriano pitched six strong innings as the host Pittsburgh Pirates won their eighth in a row. Alvarez hit his 20th homer in the second.

Saturday’s interleague results

Cardinals 7, Athletics 1 — Adam Wainwright pitched a five-hitter to become the NL’s second 11-game winner, Matt Adams had his first two-homer game and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the host Oakland Athletics. Wainwright (11-5) tied Washington’s Jordan Zimmerman for most wins in the NL.

Cubs 5, Mariners 3 — Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning to lift the visiting Chicago Cubs.

Reds 6, Rangers 4 — Devin Mesoraco hit a two-run homer to left to break 4-4 tie in the 11th and power the Cincinnati Reds, whose five pitchers allowed five hits.
