The Philadelphia Eagles released two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Babin in the first major roster move for a team that’s lost seven consecutive games.
Babin had just 5˝ sacks after recording 18 last year. He signed a five-year, $28 million deal last summer after going to his first Pro Bowl with Tennessee following the 2010 season.
Coach Andy Reid says the Eagles cut Babin to give more playing time to young players.
The Eagles also will place wide receiver DeSean Jackson on injured reserve after he sustained multiple rib fractures in Monday’s loss to Carolina.
Jackson leads the team with 45 catches and 700 yards receiving. Coach Andy Reid says the injury could take six weeks to heal.
Reid says running back LeSean McCoy remains in phase one of his concussion recovery and Michael Vick is in the fourth of five stages. Vick has missed the last two games.
Big Ben throws passes
Ben Roethlisberger took a break from changing his newborn son’s diapers to throw a few passes with his sprained right shoulder on Monday.
The Pittsburgh Steelers saw enough to ask their franchise quarterback to throw a few more over the next few days, hoping he can recover in time to salvage a season in danger of slipping through their fingers.
Safety Troy Polamalu and wide receiver Antonio Brown could both play Sunday. Polamalu has been limited to just five quarters all season due to a right calf injury, though Tomlin said he’s “encouraged” by Polamalu’s progress.
