Derek Toadvine had three hits and drove in a run and Zarley Zalewski had two hits and two RBI for the Kent State baseball team in a 7-5 win over host Eastern Michigan on Tuesday.

The Golden Flashes (24-20, 13-6) scored three runs in the top of the second inning on a two-run double by Zalewski, who also scored an unearned run on an error by the right fielder.

The Eagles tied the score with three runs in the bottom of the third. Then the Flashes scored a run in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead before the Eagles again tied the score with a run in the fifth.

The Flashes took control of the game in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI double by T.J. Sutton (GlenOak), an RBI triple by Justin Wagler (Lake) and an RBI single by Toadvine.

Flashes starting pitcher Nick Jensen-Clagg gave up four runs on four hits in 4? innings and struck out two in the no decision. Reliever John Birkbeck (GlenOak) worked two inings and earned the win.

The Golden Flashes travel to Youngstown State today for a 3 p.m. game.

Softball

Lauren Grimes and Lauren Balodis each homered and Kim Kirkpatrick had a two-run double to lead host Kent State to a 5-4 win over Cleveland State on Tuesday in the second game of a doubleheader.

Grimes hit a two-run home run and Balodis hit a solo homer in a four-run first inning for the Flashes (24-18-1). Jessacca Gironda had a triple and Caitie Kilbane had a single for the Flashes.

Starting pitcher Lauren McNeil (Hoban) gave up four runs on eight hits and struck out six for her fifth win.

Starting pitcher Alyssa Frankenfield gave up six runs on six hits and struck out six through 5? innings as the Golden Flashes lost the first game 6-3.

Abbey Ledford and Ariele Patterson each had an RBI for the Flashes and Kirkpatrick led the team with two hits in the opener.
