The University of Akron softball team lost to host Northern Illinois 3-0 in the series rubber match Saturday.
The Zips (12-15, 1-2 Mid-American Conference) only managed two hits off starter Alex Frenz. The sophomore right-hander went the distance, struck out three and walked two for the Huskies (13-11, 2-1).
Savannah Fruin doubled and stole a base for UA.
Kent State won its first MAC series of the year with a 6-3 victory over host Eastern Michigan.
The Golden Flashes (10-15, 2-1) scored all six runs in the first two innings to seize control over the Eagles (12-14, 1-2).
Jen Cader drilled a double off the wall in the first inning to score Emily Dobbin and Maddy Grimm, who was intentionally walked in all four plate appearances.
In the second inning, Kellie Abeska singled up the middle to score two. Bailey Brownfield then hit her second single of the day to drive in another run.
Kent State won its fifth consecutive game, defeating host Ball State 6-3.
The win clinched the series for the Golden Flashes (14-6, 2-0) heading into Game 3 Sunday afternoon.
Kent State was sparked by a three-run sixth inning and a dominant relief effort by junior Jared Skolnicki.
The Flashes collected four of their 11 hits in the sixth. Reilly Hawkins delivered a pinch-hit, bases-loaded single to score Pete Schuler before Luke Burch singled to score Dom Iero.
Skolnicki earned his first save of the year with 3? innings of one-hit relief.
Track and field
UA garnered six first-place finishes at the Roadrunner Invitational in San Antonio.
Matt Ludwig (pole vault) and Phil Jagers (discus) took first in their field events.
