No. 20 Kent State gymnastics lost 195.6-193.6 to host Ball State on Sunday.

The Flashes were strong on floor, but a weak vault rotation ensured the Cardinals’ victory.

Despite the loss, seniors Ali Marrero and Brooke Timko won individual events.

Marrero took first on balance beam with a 9.825, and Timko tied for first on uneven bars, also scoring a 9.825.

The Flashes will face Wisconsin-Oshkosh, William & Mary, and George Washington in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 4.

Tennis

The University of Akron women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Wright State in its home opener on Sunday at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.

“Tough loss today as a team,” UA coach Brandon Padgett said. “We didn’t play the level of doubles that we needed to play, and as we continue to see, many matches come down to the doubles point.”

In singles play, Zips sophomore Rita Pedroso beat Karoline Haller 6-4, 6-4.

Freshman Miruna Vasilescu and freshman Madison Wolfe also won.

The Zips go on the road against Utah State on Feb. 4.
