The University of Akron-Wayne College Warriors won the 47th annual Ohio Regional Campus (ORC) Men’s Basketball State Tournament championship on Sunday.
The No. 5 seed Warriors, coached by Patrick Rufener, defeated Ohio State-Mansfield, Ohio University-Eastern, top-seed Miami-Middletown and Ohio State-Newark in succession over two weekends to capture the title. The first two rounds were played in Newark; the final two rounds in Orrville. The Warriors topped OSU-Newark 88-72 in the championship game.
Wayne’s roster included: Jackie Adams (East), Jacob Blevins (Highland), DeVaughn Boddie (Archbishop Hoban), Rick Brewer (Green), Kimyata Cooper (Kenmore), De’Shon Hudson (East), Gio Ingersoll (Firestone), Anthony Keys (Barberton) and Andrew Lowe (Kingsway Christian).
Hudson was named ORC State Tournament Most Valuable Player. Brewer also earned an All-Tournament nod. The Warriors finished their season 18-16.
Wayne College had won previous ORC titles in 1985 and 1996.
The Ohio Athletic Conference named Muskingum University freshman Rusty Lockhart (Coventry) as the OAC Wrestler of the Week.
Lockhart went 3-0 at the Case Western Reserve University quad this weekend with one fall and two tech falls. He did not allow an opponent to last past the second period.
