University of Akron junior Clayton Murphy signed a professional contract with Nike, Doyle Management announced on Wednesday. Murphy will forgo his senior year of NCAA eligibility with the Zips.

Murphy had announced intention to turn pro at the Portland Track Festival, days after winning the NCAA 1,500-meter title in Eugene, Ore.

In his final season as a Zip, Murphy won the NCAA indoor 800-meter and recorded the third-fastest time in the 1,500.

Women’s basketball

Anita Brown, a four-time letter winner for the University of Akron, signed a women’s professional contract to play in Bulgaria. Brown will join the Nefochimic 2010 club in Burgas, Bulgaria in the Bulgarian National Basketball League.

Brown played in 127 games for the Zips, fourth most in program history. She ranks in the top 10 for UA in scoring, points per game, rebounds and assists.

Women’s golf

University of Akron golfer Danielle Nicholson qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship by winning the qualifier at Port Huron Golf Club in Fort Gratiot Twp., Mich.

Nicholson shot a 2-under-par 70 to become the first UA women’s golfer to qualify for the U.S. Amateur. Teammate Pader finished 10th and missed the qualifying mark by 3 strokes.
