Ariane Beaumont-Courteau, a sophomore on Akronís womenís track and field team, was named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week Wednesday, the league office announced.

Beaumont-Courteau, a dietetics major, has maintained a 3.986 cumulative GPA. She nabbed first place in the womenís pole vault at the Kent Duals last weekend with a clearance of 13-05.25.

That vault was good enough to rank fourth in school history and 10th among all Division I.

Her mark is also 7 inches better than any other MAC athlete this season.


The National Pro Fastpitch commissioner, Cheri Kempf, has announced the upcoming 2012 season schedule.

The Akron Racers will open the season at home with a four-game weekend series June 9 against the Carolina Diamonds, the newest addition to the NPF.

The Diamonds join the Racers, Chicago Bandits and USSSA Florida Pride to make up the four-team league.

This yearís slate includes a 44-game regular season, with the NPF Championship Series beginning Aug. 23.

Television plans for this season have not been announced, although every game will be streamed online.

Akron hasnít won the Championship Series trophy since 2005.
