University of Akron softball recruit Kenzie Conrad of LaGrange Keystone High School was named the MaxPreps National player of the year.
Conrad, who was the Ohio Gatorade State Player of the Year, led Keystone to a 32-0 record, the Division II state championship and the No. 1 national ranking in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 rankings, was 25-0 as a pitcher and batted .485.
Conrad pitched 14 shutouts, had an 0.74 ERA and struck out 178 batters in 142 innings. She allowed just 15 earned runs and 17 walks.
She hit 11 home runs and had 44 RBI for the Wildcats.
Conradís Keystone teammate Erin Pond earned second-team All-America honors from MaxPreps. Pond, a shortstop, will join Conrad with the Zips. Pond had a .510 batting average with nine home runs, 47 RBI and a .998 slugging percentage.
Walsh Jesuit graduate Tyler McHugh won the Northern Ohio Junior PGA Championship on Tuesday at Shady Hollow Country Club in Massillon.
McHugh, who shot a final-round 71 and had a two-day total of 151, qualified for the 36th Junior PGA Championship July 31-Aug. 5 at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Barberton hall of fame
Eight former Barberton athletes will make up the class of 2012 for the Barberton Sports Hall of Fame.
Bill Muckleroy (baseball), Gary Kovacs (football), Jeff Saylor (baseball), Heather Frey Kropp (softball), Ron Gable (football), Jack Morgan (basketball), Harriet Waxman (O.C. Barber Award) and Larry Ricks (Chuck Ebner Presidentís Award) will be honored on Nov. 21.
The Induction banquet will be at the Barberton Slovene Center at 6 p.m.
