Kent State opened the Mid-American Conference part of its baseball schedule by sweeping three games at Ball State (11-13, 0-3), including ?9-4 on Sunday behind 20 hits.
Kent State (15-6, 3-0) scored five runs in the first two innings. Leadoff batter Luke Burch opened the game with the first of his four singles. Mason Mamarella went 3-for-6 with three RBI, and Pete Schuler and Sam Hurt each hit his first home run of the season.
Starting pitcher Joey Murray earned the win to improve to 3-0. He tied a career high with 11 strikeouts in 5? innings.
The Akron menís team finished 12th at the Furman Intercollegiate with a three-round total of 10 over par in the field of 21. Clemson won the team title at 29 under.
George Baylis led the Zips by finishing in a tie at 34th. Baylis was 2 under Sunday on the par-72 Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.
The University of Akron womenís team set a program record with its 16th consecutive win, beating Eastern Michigan 7-0 Sunday at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
