The Kent State University softball team split a doubleheader with host Pittsburgh on Wednesday, losing the first game 6-0 and winning the second game 8-5 at Vartabedian Field.
Sophomore Lauren McNeil (Archbishop Hoban) and freshman Emma Johnson combined to hold the Panthers (16-13) to four hits in the second-game win.
Sophomore Abbey Ledford, senior Jess Blanton and sophomore Alex Marcantonio (North Canton Hoover) each had an RBI in a three-run third inning.
The Golden Flashes (13-15) added three more in the fifth on a two-run double by Marcantonio and an RBI single by senior Shannon Laughlin.
Marcantonio had an RBI single in the seventh and led the Golden Flashes with four RBI.
Kent State senior Ross Tice and junior Mallie Shuster were named to the 2012 Academic All-MAC wrestling team on Thursday.
Tice, a four-time selection, finished his career with 98 victories and placed in the top four at the MAC Tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
Shuster, a two-time selection, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships and placed third at the MAC Championships. Shuster placed fourth at the Mat Town Invitational and was named MAC Wrestler of the Week in December.
Junior Tommy Sasfy earned an honorable mention. Sasfy placed fourth at the Eastern Michigan Open this season.
Track and field
University of Akron sophomore Brad Hough was named MAC Menís Track Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
Hough won the 3,000 meters with a time of 14:28.73 at the LSU Relays in Baton Rouge last Friday, 11 seconds faster than second place.
Single-game tickets for the 2012 Racers season go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday. Club seats are $10, VIP seating is $8 and stadium and terrace seating is $7.
