Kent State swept a doubleheader against Central Michigan at Dix Stadium in the opening of MAC play.

The Golden Flashes (15-15, 2-0) won the first game 5-2 and overcame an early deficit to win the nightcap 3-2.

Freshman pitcher Emma Johnson earned both victories with a complete game in the first game and two scoreless innings of relief in the second game.

Senior Jess Blanton hit a three-run home run, and senior Mary Holt hit a two-run blast in the fourth inning to lead the Golden Flashes in the opener.

Sophomore Alex Marcantonio (North Canton Hoover) hit a game-tying, two-run homer in the fourth inning of the second game.

Freshman Dani Ramos hit the game-winning single in the fifth inning to give the Flashes the win.

More softball

The University of Akron opened MAC play with 8-0 and 12-7 losses to Toledo at Lee R. Jackson Softball Field.

Kellie Roudabush went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a double and Alissa Birkhimer had four RBI to lead the Zips (11-16-1, 0-2 MAC).

Tennis

The University of Akron won five out of six singles matches to come from behind and defeat Western Michigan 5-2 for its second consecutive MAC win.

The No. 1 doubles pair of Zara Harutyunyan and Prang Pantusart won the first doubles match 8-5.

The Zips dropped the next two doubles matches to fall behind early.

Harutyunyan won her first singles match to even the score before Pantusart lost her No. 3 singles match to give the Broncos the advantage.

The Zips earned straight-set wins in the remaining four matches to earn the win over the Broncos.

Golf

Sophomore Erin Hawe and senior Mercedes Germino each shot a 1-under-par 71 to lead the Kent State women to a sixth-place tie after the opening round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga.

Track and field

Sophomore Ariane Beaumont-Courteau cleared 13 feet, 5§ inches in the pole vault to claim third place and lead the University of Akron during the third day of the 85th Annual Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin on Friday.

Junior Nick Banke finished in third place in both the shot put and the discus, and Katherine Lee finished in 14th place in the pole vault to lead the Zips.

Kent State University junior Kenneth Agee finished fifth in the menís high jump section B with a mark of 6-10? to lead the Golden Flashes.
