University of Akron junior Phil Jagers (Solon) finished first in the menís discus on Friday at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary at North Florida University in Jacksonville, Fla.

Jagers won with a throw of 205 feet, 9 inches to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., from June 8-11.

Jagers will be joined in Eugene by his brother, Kent Stateís Reginald Jagers, who finished in fourth with a throw of 197-5.

Akron senior Claudia Garcia Jou tied for first in the womenís high jump and senior Caroline Hasse tied for 11th in the womenís pole vault to advance to the NCAA Championships.

Garcia Jou tied Lehighís Courtney Avery with a mark of 5-10ĺ, and Hasse tied Purdueís Jessica Harter with a mark of 13-9ľ to finish 11th. The top 12 in each field event qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Akronís Rebecca Szabo and Rebecca Pietsch and Kent Stateís Morgan Estes and Samantha Tollerud failed to qualify in the womenís pole vault.

Akron junior Ian Behn failed to qualify in the menís javelin and Kent State freshman JaiíLyn Mosley and Akron freshman Abigale Wilson each failed to qualify in the womenís discuss.

The final round of the NCAA East Preliminary begin on Saturday at 3 p.m. with the menís triple jump. Running events begin at 6 p.m. with the womenís 400 meter relay.
