The University of Akron softball team defeated visiting Miami 7-3 on Friday.

Maddy Clowdus went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, Cassie Gillespie drove in a run and scored three runs and starting pitcher Kayla Kmett pitched a complete game for her second win of the season to lead the Zips (3-39-1).

• Madi Huck pitched her sixth shutout of the season to lead the Kent State softball team to a 7-0 win over host Bowling Green.

Holly Speers hit a two-run home run and Brenna Brownfield hit a solo home run to lead the Golden Flashes (24-19, 10-8 MAC).

Baseball

Tim Dalporto hit a three-run home run in the first inning to lead Kent State to a 3-1 win over host Toledo on Friday.

Starting pitcher Joey Murray allowed one hit and struck out eight through 7⅓ innings for his seventh win of the season.

Golf

UA’s George Baylis and Kent State’s Bjarki Petursson finished the first day of the Mid-American Conference men’s championship at Sycamore Hills in Fort Wayne, Ind., tied for second place with a 4-over 148.

The Golden Flashes are in second place with a team score of 23-over 599 and the Zips are in fourth place at 34 over with the third round to be played on Saturday and fourth round on Sunday.

Track and field

UA freshman Emily Taylor earned third place in the women’s hammer throw at the Ashland Alumni Open.
