Shawn Barber, the University of Akronís 2014 NCAA Indoor pole vault champion, placed seventh Saturday with a vault of 17 feet, 5Ĺ inches at the East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Fla. Barber, a sophomore, is one of a program-high eight Zips who qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships at the University of Oregon on June 11-14.

Joining him will be menís teammates Bryan Jones and Alex McCune (decathlon). The five womenís team members going to Eugene, Ore., are Alexis Cooks (hammer throw and discus), Brittany Funk (hammer), and pole vaulters Annika Roloff, Caroline Haase and Claire Lucas.

Kent State had qualified six athletes to the NCAA Championships from Jacksonville on Thursday and Friday.

Racers

The Akron Racers lost late Friday at home to Chicago 12-8. The teams combined for 20 runs and 30 hits that dropped the Racersí record to 1-1.

Three Akron pitchers, including starter and first-round draft pick Hannah Campbell, could not keep the Bandits off the bases, giving up 16 hits including five Chicago home runs.

Kelley Montalvo paced the Racersí offense with a single, two doubles and four runs batted in.
