The University of Akron women’s tennis team won its 18th consecutive match on Friday with a 5-2 win over host Buffalo.
The Zips (19-2, 3-0 Mid-American Conference) won five of six singles matches to secure the match point after the Bulls won the doubles point.
Sophia Geier won the No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-2 to move to 18-1 in singles play this year. Ariadna Blinova won the No. 2 singles match, Shannon Newnes won the No. 4 singles match, Luisa Echeverry won at the fifth singles spot and Carli Knezevich won at No. 6.
Track and field
UA senior Phil Jagers captured the men’s discus title to lead the Zips on the opening night of the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, Texas, on Thursday. Jagers won with a toss of 193-0.
Friday’s Kent State home baseball game against Buffalo was postponed because of rain. The teams will play at 3 p.m. Saturday and play a doubleheader Sunday.
