The University of Akron qualified two athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field championships with strong performances on the first day of the NCAA track & field preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla., on Thursday night.

Brittany Funk and Alexis Cooks each advanced in the hammer throw.

Funk placed third with a throw of 211 feet, 4 inches. Cooks came in 10th with a toss of 196-11.

The top 12 in each event advance to the championship meet, which will be held in Eugene, Ore., from June 11-14.

Jake Hiltner and Jessica Delic just missed, finishing 14th in the 800 with a time of 1:48.74 and 14th in the javelin throw with a toss of 157-11, respectively.
