The University of Akron volleyball team fell 15-9 in the fifth set to host Toledo in a Mid-American Conference match Saturday night.

Junior Kayla Gwozdz led the Zips in digs (16) and kills (19).

Freshman Emily Weigand tallied 47 assists for Akron (6-10, 2-2), which won the first set 25-14, lost the next two and then rallied to extend the match by winning the fourth set 25-21.

Kent State lost its fourth match in a row, losing 15-6 in the fifth set to visiting Miami in MAC action.

Freshman Natalie Tagala defended well with 19 digs and led the Flashes in assists with 47.

Senior Challen Geraghty led Kent State (2-13, 0-4) with 29 digs.

Women’s tennis

University of Akron junior Luisa Echeverry and senior Waverly Wituski both finished third in their singles flights at Wright State’s Raider Invitational on Saturday morning.

Echeverry placed third by defeating IUPUI’s Kristina Tinsley 6-3, 6-2.

Wituski beat Bowling Green’s Sidney Reineke 6-4, 6-4.
