The University of Akron volleyball team lost in straight sets to host Bowling Green on Friday night at the Stroh Center.

Julia Smagacz had nine kills, Karley Kusan had 28 assists and Brenna Mack had 14 digs to lead the Zips (8-18, 2-9 MAC) against the Falcons.

The Zips travel to Oxford to play Miami at 7 p.m. Saturday.

•?The Kent State volleyball team lost 3-1 to Ohio on Thursday night at the M.A.C. Center.

The Golden Flashes (12-12, 4-7 MAC) lost the first two sets, but won the third set 27-25 before losing the fourth and deciding set 22-25.

Freshman libero Challen Geraghty had 28 digs, and senior Kaylee Koller had 15 digs to lead the Flashes’ defense.

Freshman Brittney Jakscht had 44 assists, and freshman Kelsey Bittinger had 11 kills for the Flashes.

Kent State hosts Central Michigan at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Soccer

Junior Madison Helterbran scored with 30 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Kent State women’s soccer team a 3-2 win over Ohio on Thursday in Athens.

The Golden Flashes (10-6-3, 5-4-2 Mid-American Conference) will play Ball State on Sunday in Muncie, Ind., in a MAC Tournament quarterfinal match.

The Flashes took a 1-0 lead when freshman Doni Capehart fed sophomore Abbie Lawson for a goal in the 13th minute.

The Bobcats tied the score in the 21st minute, and scored again in the 40th minute to take a 2-1 halftime lead.

The Flashes tied the score in the 57th minute when sophomore Jenna Hellstrom scored off an assist from senior Stephanie Haugh.

Helterbran scored off an assist from Haugh before time ran out in the first overtime period for the win.
