University of Akron junior Matt Ludwig set a personal best and won the elite pole vault competition to lead the Zips on the opening night of the Penn State National on Friday in University Park, Pa.

Ludwig’s mark of 18-6¾ was the eighth-best jump in the world this year and is the second-best mark in UA indoor program history, surpassing the 18-3¼ he cleared on Jan. 13.

Phil Jagers recorded the fourth-best throw (63-10¼) in UA indoor history in the men’s weight throw to finish third. Jamir Coleman placed third in the men’s long jump (22-11¾) and Dara Perry advanced to the final of the women’s 60-meter hurdles to be run on Saturday.

Women’s tennis

The University of Akron defeated St. Bonaventure 7-0 and Niagara 6-1 on Friday in Olean, N.Y.

The Zips (3-1) won the doubles point in both matches, with Luisa Echeverry and Miruna Vasilescu getting two wins at No. 1 doubles. Rita Pedroso won her first No. 1 singles match of the season against the Bonnies, Echeverry won both matches at No. 2 singles and Vasilescu, Madison Wolfe and Waverly Wituski each won their respective singles matches.
