BOATING

The Akron Sail and Power Squadron (ASPS) will conduct a series of 6-week-long boating safety courses in various locations throughout the greater Akron area. This course is open to the public and satisfies Ohio’s Mandatory Boater Education Law, which requires boaters born after Jan. 1, 1982, who operate a boat over 10hp to obtain the Ohio Boater Education Card. Developed by the United States Power Squadron (USPS), America’s Boating Course includes a 244-page full-color manual. The manual is the course textbook containing five chapters packed with boating tips, including the nautical rules of the road, useful information on boating law, safety equipment and safe boating practice, navigation, boating problems and trailering, storing and protecting your boat. The first four chapters contain core boating information while the last optional chapter provides an introduction to GPS waypoint navigation and piloting via dead reckoning skills. The course fee is $35. Graduates receive a 6-month membership in the ASPS and the “Ohio Boating Education Card,” mandatory for boat operators born after 1981. The course runs 7 to 9 p.m. and is being offered twice during the month of April at the following locations: Cuyahoga Falls High School, 2300 Fourth St. Cuyahoga Falls, in the school library beginning April 9 and continuing each Tuesday through May 14; and at Copley High School, 3807 Ridgewood Road, Copley Township, in Room 127 beginning on April 10 and continuing each Wednesday through May 15.
