COLUMBUS: Tom Herman was among those caught on Atlanta’s ice-coated freeways on Tuesday and Wednesday. The assistant football coach at Ohio State University went nowhere fast for more than 19 hours until he decided to do something about it.

Stuck in a traffic jam on I-285 about 4 miles from the Atlanta airport, Herman abandoned his rental car early Wednesday morning in favor of trying to hike to the finish, which for him meant a seat on a Delta Air Lines flight to Dallas-Fort Worth.

He made it, his effort boosted by a ride for the final 1˝ miles by a Delta employee named Terry Spiller.
