RubberDucks 5, ?Flying Squirrels 4

The RubberDucks built a 3-0 lead and held on to defeat the Flying Squirrels in Richmond, Va., on Monday.

The Ducks (44-34) jumped on Squirrels pitcher Dan Slania (6-5) early. Top prospect Bradley Zimmer hit a home run to center field in the first, and the Ducks added two more runs in the second on a run-scoring groundout by Mike Papi and an RBI single by Claudio Bautista.

The Squirrels (27-49) got back in the game with a run off of Ducks starting pitcher Shawn Morimando (10-3) in the bottom of the second on Steve Lerud’s base hit to right-center.

But, with the bases loaded, Morimando induced a harmless fly ball to right field to escape with a 3-1 lead,

Morimando left with a 4-2 lead after pitching six innings. The left-hander, who earned his league-leading 10th win against three losses, allowed two earned runs on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

The Ducks added a run in the eighth on Nellie Rodriguez’s 15th home run.

The Squirrels scored twice in the ninth inning off Perci Garner, but came up a run short.

The two teams play again at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday.
