Federer in Weber Open
• Borna Coric defeated defending champion Roger Federer 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-2 to win the Gerry Weber Open final in Halle, Germany, on Sunday.
The 21-year-old Croat saved three of the four break points he faced and took his second match point to end Federer’s 20-match winning streak on grass for his second career title.
Coric, who defeated second-seeded Alexander Zverev in the first round, saved two set points in the first set tiebreaker.
“I was impressed with him,” Federer said after only his third loss of the year. “He was always a tick better in the end and he took his chances.”
Federer, who skipped the entire clay-court season for the second year in a row, had been going for his 99th title, one week after taking his 18th grass-court title in Stuttgart.
Canucks acquire center Kero from Blackhawks
• The Vancouver Canucks have acquired center Tanner Kero from the Chicago Blackhawks for center Michael Chaput.
The 25-year-old Kero split last season between the Blackhawks and the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs. He had a goal and two assists in eight games with Chicago and eight goals and 12 assists in 36 games with Rockford.
The 6-foot, 185-pound center from Michigan has appeared in 72 career NHL games.
Kero previously played for the Michigan Tech Huskies.

Jason Johnson dies
• World of Outlaws sprint car series driver Jason Johnson has died following a crash at Beaver Dam Raceway in Wisconsin. He was 41.
The World of Outlaws series posted a message on Twitter saying that Johnson had died.
The series says the driver from Eunice, La., was injured during a race Saturday night on the dirt oval at Beaver Dam. World of Outlaws says he crashed on lap 18 of a 40-lap race while racing for the lead. Johnson was taken to a hospital.
A message posted Sunday morning on the Twitter account for Jason Johnson Racing said that the team was “heartbroken and saddened to tell you that we have lost our leader, friend, family member and our hero.”
Condolences poured in on social media. NASCAR drivers woke up to news of Johnson’s death hours before their race in California.
“Won some races, and championships together. Jason was a great leader for his team and strong man for his family,” Ricky Stenhouse Jr. wrote on Twitter.
• Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the French Grand Prix from pole position to retake the lead of the Formula One title race in Le Castellet, France.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen in his Ferrari crossed second and third to complete the podium at the Paul Ricard Circuit.
Defending champion Hamilton was never challenged after he reached the first corner a split second before Sebastian Vettel knocked into Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas.
