Louisville interim coach named amid U.S. scandal

• Louisville named assistant David Padgett as interim replacement for men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino amid a federal bribery investigation.

Padgett, 32, a former player for the Cardinals, is coming off his first season as an assistant after two seasons as Louisville’s director of basketball operations.

“It’s not going to be easy,” Padgett said at a news conference on campus Friday. “It’s a very tumultuous time.”

University interim President Greg Postel made the announcement, two days after Pitino was placed on unpaid administrative leave after the school acknowledged its involvement in the federal investigation. Louisville Athletic Director Tom Jurich was placed on paid administrative leave.

Ten people have been arrested in the corruption case, including four college assistant coaches and an Adidas executive.

• The eight-team 2017 Paradise Jam basketball tournament has been moved from the U.S. Virgin Islands to Liberty University on Nov. 17-19 because of damage from hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Former Olympic champion Ludmila Belousova dies

• Russian Ludmila Belousova, a two-time Olympic champion in pairs figure skating, has died at age 81. There was no immediate information on the cause or where she died.

She and her partner husband Oleg Protopopov won gold at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics before defecting to Switzerland from the Soviet Union in 1979.

• Team Penske will field an entry for IndyCar stars Juan Pablo Montoya, Helio Castroneves and Simon Pagenaud in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar season finale at Road Atlanta.

• French driver Romain Grosjean escaped without injury after clipping a loose drain and flying into the crash barriers in the second practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix in Formula One.

Memphis football player dismissed over robbery

• Memphis dismissed defensive back Shaun Rupert from its football team after police said he used a handgun in May to steal two watches, an Xbox and a laptop from another student’s apartment.

• Australian Ashleigh Barty beat French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-0 to reach the finals at the Wuhan Open in China. She will play France’s Caroline Garcia.

• English boxer Tony Bellew will fight David Haye on Dec. 17 in London in a rematch of their all-British heavyweight encounter in March that was won by Bellew.

• Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero was hospitalized with a suspected broken rib after a car crash in the Netherlands.
