University of Akron (6-4) vs. Texas Southern University (1-11)

Time: 7 tonight.

Where: Rhodes Arena.

Radio: WARF (1350-AM).

Notebook: UA defeated Cleveland State 87-57 Sunday. Nick Harney led the Zips with 19 points. Zeke Marshall (18 points), Demetrius Treadwell (15 points), Alex Abreu (11 points) and Jake Kretzer (11 points) also reached double figures. … UA coach Keith Dambrot isn’t about to be fooled by the Tigers’ record. TSU lost to Houston 78-75, Colorado 85-80 in two overtimes, San Diego State 74-62 and Kansas State 78-69. The Tigers also feature first-year coach Mike Davis, who formerly coached for six seasons at Indiana University and six seasons at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “The record is misleading,” Dambrot said. “They have played eight out of 12 games on the road. They have two really good scoring guards, [5-foot-9 senior] Omar Strong and [5-9 junior] Raymond Penn, a transfer from Oklahoma State. Penn played two years at Oklahoma State. He averaged 30 minutes per game as a freshman and 22 minutes per game as a sophomore. Strong averages 15.5 points this season and Penn averages 12.8 points. The key for us is that we have to play good one-on-on defense against those guys. They also have an all-league guy inside, Fred Sturdivant, a 6-7 senior. He is averaging about 10 points per game. The biggest thing is that we have to make those guards work every play. They play a tough schedule, so these guys have experience. They played a lot of good teams already. They are not some run-of-the-mill team. They have had some nights where they struggled because they are a jump-shooting team and have traveled so much. They are going to win their league, in my opinion. They are 1-11, but they will be right there to win the SWAC and have a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament.”
