The University of Akron women’s basketball team dropped to 9-12 overall and 3-4 in the Mid-American Conference after losing to Northern Illinois 72-66 at Rhodes Arena on Wednesday night.
The Zips led 56-54 with 5:39 remaining, but couldn’t keep up with Northern Illinois’ trio of scorers in the closing minutes.
Forward Carly Young led UA with a team-high 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting and seven rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end.
Jasmine Mushington scored 12 points and had two steals off the bench and Ti’eshia Stubbs added 11 and two steals.
As a team, UA shot just 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from the free-throw line.
Claire Jakubicek finished with 18 points and six rebounds to lead the Huskies (8-11, 2-5). Amanda Corral added 17 points and Kim Davis scored 15 and had a team-high seven rebounds.
UA plays next at Eastern Michigan on Saturday.
