Softball coach Julie Jones has signed a three-year contract extension, the University of Akron announced Friday in a news release.

The agreement runs through August 2015.

“We are proud that Zips softball will continue to benefit from Julie’s strong leadership,” Director of Athletics Tom Wistrcill said in the news release. “She has worked hard to establish a tradition of recruiting strong classes and developing them into well-rounded student-athletes and Mid-American Conference contenders.

“Julie is the right fit for our program because of her Northeast Ohio roots and the way she serves as a mentor to her student-athletes, a peer leader to other coaches in our department and a role model in the greater Akron community.”

In her seventh season with UA, Jones led the team to a 24-29-1 overall record last spring and an 8-14 record in the MAC. The Zips finished the season with nine wins in their final 12 games, including a sweep of rival Kent State.
