The Charter One bank branch in the Dave’s Market in East Akron will close Sunday.

“We’re consolidating the Dave’s branch with our nearby Charter One branch on Broadway to be able to provide the best services to our customers,” Charter One spokeswoman Carrie Carpenter said.

The branch will close at 3 p.m. Sunday, Carpenter said.

Carpenter said the nearest office is 333 S. Broadway, which is 1.5 miles away.

All six employees have been moved to other branches. The bank has 17 locations in Summit County, including seven in Acme Fresh Market stores. The Dave’s Market branch opened in 2004 when the store began operations.

The Dave’s chain, based in Cleveland, is evaluating whether to replace Charter One with another bank, a store official said.

Dave’s, founded in the late 1920s, has 14 locations in the Cleveland area. The East Exchange location, called Middlebury Market, is its only Akron outlet.

The Akron store opened in 2004 after the East Akron Neighborhood Development Corp. worked with neighborhood activists and the city to get a grocery store. The neighborhood’s last large grocery store had closed eight years earlier.
