A Giant Eagle official on Monday confirmed it could be an anchor in the new Portage Crossing development at the site of the former State Road Shopping Plaza, if the project moves forward.

It is the first revelation of any store identity in the development at State Road and Portage Path.

Cuyahoga Falls Mayor Don Robart previously said a major grocer had committed as one of 15 stores to come and developer Stark Enterprises was working with a “big-box store” before announcing tenants.

On Monday, Robart said he could not identify the grocer, but that it would be a 94,000 square-foot store. Asked if the company already had an existing store in Cuyahoga Falls, Robart said yes.

Giant Eagle spokesman Dan Donovan issued the following statement:

“We are very excited about the opportunity to bring the very best Giant Eagle shopping experience to Cuyahoga Falls residents. We are hopeful that the developer can put together the remaining pieces of this development to make the project a reality.”

The Pittsburgh-based chain has a Giant Eagle store on Graham Road across the street to the north of the proposed development. No information was available about the existing store’s fate or the timeline for the new store, if it moves forward.

A groundbreaking is expected at Portage Crossing in the spring with completion by fall 2013, Robart said.
