Position battles: Rookie Mitchell Schwartz practiced at right tackle with the first-team offense after veteran Oniel Cousins filled that role on Friday. “We anticipate and expect that [Schwartz is] gonna be our starter there,” coach Pat Shurmur said.

Who stood out: Second-year cornerback James Dockery broke up at least three passes.

Highs and lows: Thunderstorms rolled through Berea on Saturday morning, and the Browns delayed opening the gates to fans for about 45 minutes because of the weather. But the rain subsided, and the entire practice was held outdoors. According to the Browns, 2,937 fans attended the first practice open to the public. … Cornerback Joe Haden appeared to be bothered by a foot or ankle injury, but he continued to practice. He later revealed that wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi stepped on his big toe during a one-on-one drill. … Rookie wide receiver Josh Gordon dropped a pass over his shoulder from quarterback Brandon Weeden. But Haden and Shurmur later praised Gordon for his ability to fight off bump-and-run coverage and create separation.

Sidelined: Defensive tackles Ahtyba Rubin (reported pelvic tear), Phil Taylor (torn pectoral muscle), fullback Eddie Williams (undisclosed), tight end Evan Moore (undisclosed), wide receiver Carlton Mitchell (leg) and rookie cornerback Trevin Wade (leg).

Today’s schedule: The first practice in which players will wear full pads is to run from 8:45 to 11:15 a.m. and is open to the public.
