Archbishop Hoban High School senior Tyler Gilchrist has committed to play football on scholarship at the University of Akron.

Gilchrist, an Akron resident, is 5-foot-10 and 187 pounds. He helped guide the Knights to a 14-1 overall record in 2015 and a win over Toledo Central Catholic in the Division III state championship game at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.

“I just want to say thank you to all the teams that invested their time into me,” Gilchrist wrote on his Twitter account.

“It has been a blessing to be able to have the opportunities that I’ve had. With that said, I have decided to further my education and athletics at the University of Akron. I truly feel this is the best decision for me, and I believe Akron is going to give me the best opportunity to be successful. Thank you everyone who believed in me along the way.”

Gilchrist contributed to Hoban’s offense and defense as a wide receiver and defensive back. He told the Beacon Journal on Friday that his college position is undecided.

“They have me as an athlete right now,” said Gilchrist, 18. “They asked me what I wanted to play and I told them I want to play whatever position that will help me get on the field the fastest and help the team win games.

“I want to thank my friends, family and coaches for putting me in the position I am in. I am also thankful to Akron’s coaching staff for believing in me, and having faith that I can contribute to the team. I plan on doing big things at Akron.”
