Greynolds led Barberton to the 1976 Class AAA state championship with a 25-0 record. The Magics were Class AAA state runner-up in 1976 (25-1) and in 1982 (22-6).

Greynolds’ teams also won 17 sectional titles, six district titles and three regional titles.

Proceeds from the Classic go toward youth programs and equipment, as well as stroke awareness education in Barberton. Bako said in seven years the Greynolds Classic has raised $133,500 for these causes.

The East boys basketball team defeated Garfield, Ellet and Walsh Jesuit last week, and in two of the games had a player score 30 points.

Senior guard Demetrius Ray totaled 60 points, 16 rebounds, eight assists and six blocks in the three wins for the Dragons (4-2, 3-1 City Series). Ray scored 30 points in a 54-46 victory over Ellet.

Sophomore guard Derik Lewis scored 30 points in a 83-72 triumph over previously undefeated Walsh Jesuit.

Walsh has a 5-1 record with senior captains Mark Mittiga, David Croft and Jordan Kay playing well.

Hoover’s dynamic duo

The North Canton Hoover boys basketball team is 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the Federal League with a pair of dynamic senior scorers, Dom Iero and 6-foot-5 post Harrison Blackledge.

Iero, a three-sport standout, scored 32 points in a 75-72 victory over host Canton McKinley on Friday night and made nine 3-pointers. That was the second time this season Iero has scored over 30 points and made nine 3-pointers in a game.

Blackledge, son of former Hoover three-sport standout Todd Blackledge, scored 28 points in the Vikings’ win over the Bulldogs and also put together a 30-point performance earlier this season against Perry.
