Green senior Abbie Pearce has committed to play on the women’s golf team at the University of Akron.

Bulldogs coach Jake Shocklee said Pearce has been in a groove recently. She shot a 3-under 70 at the Walsh Jesuit Warrior Invitational at the Country Club of Hudson on Monday to earn medalist honors in the 80-player field and lead the Bulldogs to a third-place finish. Pearce carded a 2-under 35 at Turkeyfoot Golf Course against Jackson on Tuesday when the Bulldogs topped the Polar Bears 156-160.

Pearce was named Federal League Player of the Year in 2015 and finished seventh in the Division I state tournament in Columbus.

Leading Grizzlies

The Wadsworth football team will visit Wooster on Friday with an abundance of confidence gained in a 27-24 victory over host Ashland in Week 1.

Junior Joey Baughman set a Grizzlies’ single-game record for a quarterback when he rushed for 265 yards on 30 carries in the dramatic win over the Arrows in his first varsity start. Baughman, who rushed for two touchdowns, also completed 10-of-18 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns — one to junior Mitchell Blackburn and one to senior Michael Lallathin.

The scoring pass to Lallathin covered 42 yards and came as time expired in the fourth quarter.

Justin Todd won his first game as Wadsworth coach after a challenging preseason that included injuries to senior running back Clayton Christian (out for the season), senior fullback-linebacker Alex Jones (likely out until at least the middle of the season) and junior wide receiver Christian Szalay (out for a couple of weeks).

GlenOak will host Massillon Thursday with speedy players at quarterback (Tate Rhoads), running back (DJ Donald and Elijah Ladson) and wide receiver (JJ Olivera and Daquan Johnson).

Rhoads led GlenOak to a 42-17 win over Woodside (Va.) in Week 1 with both his legs and his arm. He ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns on five carries, and completed 8-of-11 passes for 92 yards and a score.
