State baseball scouting report

Who: Perry (21-10) vs. Westlake (23-6).

What: Division I state semifinal.

When: 4 p.m. today.

Where: Huntington Park, Columbus.

Notebook: Perry and Westlake are making their first state semifinal appearances in the 85th year of the Ohio tournament. The Panthers are unranked, but have won 12 of their past 13 games. Perry defeated Hudson and Chardon in the regional tournament to advance. Seniors Jake Flounders (7-1) and Gary Lawrence (4-2) are two of the Panthers’ top pitchers and also key hitters. Senior Sam Mathie leads the team in hits, runs scored and doubles to go along with a .387 batting average. Westlake is ranked 19th and is fresh off regional tournament wins over Cleveland St. Ignatius and Ashland. The Demons have scored 31 runs in five tournament games and are led by senior pitcher Ben Neumann (5-0) and senior third baseman Andy Haders (.341 batting average). The other Division I state semifinal features top-ranked Grove City (26-2) and No. 2 Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller (24-5) at 7 p.m. today. The state final is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.
