When: Friday and Saturday.

Where: If the weather is nice at Ohio State University Outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts in Columbus. The rain facility is Elysium Tennis Center in Plain City.

Schedule: Play begins both days at 9 a.m. with Division II singles players. Matches between Division I singles players will follow, and then double teams in both divisions.

Area Division I state qualifiers

Singles: Joey Thomas, Jackson, sophomore; Aaron Sandberg, Walsh Jesuit, senior.

Doubles: Copley senior Andrew Ong and sophomore Gavin Aten; Copley seniors Matt Adzema and Nick Adzema and Jackson sophomores Anthony Kanam and Jake Zalenski.

Notebook: Sandberg, a Brown University recruit, is seeking a state singles title after placing second last year at state as a junior and third the year before as a sophomore. He finished third last week at the Oberlin district following a first-place showing at the Medina sectional. Sandberg also reached the state tournament as a freshman in doubles. He is 6-2 in state singles matches under the direction of Warriors coach Rocco Cona. Copley coach Mark Ullman will be busy with two doubles teams. Ong and Aten won the Oberlin district title and the Medina sectional title in consecutive weeks. The Adzema twin brothers were third last week. Thomas finished second in the Oberlin district following a Canton sectional title. Jackson coach Lee Fortner will also be busy with Thomas in singles and the doubles team of Kanam and Zalenski, which was fifth at the Oberlin district and first in the Canton sectional.
