Oil spill settlement near
A judge has delayed the federal trial over the nationís worst offshore oil disaster by a week, saying Sunday that BP PLC was making some progress in settlement talks with a committee overseeing scores of lawsuits, according to people close to the case. Two sources close to the case said the decision was made Sunday during a conference call between parties in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill case and U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the call. The steering committee is overseeing lawsuits filed by individuals and businesses after the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig on April 20, 2010, in the Gulf. The blast killed 11 workers and led to 206 million gallons of oil spewing from the blown-out well, soiling miles of coastline.
Gunmen fire on nightclub
Police said one man was killed and 19 other people were injured early Sunday when gunmen opened fire in a nightclub. Jackson Police Lt. Tyreece Miller said officers were called to the Karma Lounge in downtown Jackson about 2 a.m. Sunday. They arrived to find one man dead, 17 people with gunshot wounds and two who were trampled. Miller said a dispute between several people led to the shooting at the business, which had advertised a Lane College/Lemoyne-Owen College after-game party on Saturday night. Evidence so far indicates at least three people used handguns to fire into the crowd.

Boy, 12, dies in shooting
Prosecutors said the 14-year-old son of a corrections officer used her service weapon to fatally shoot his younger half brother. The Jersey Journal reported that Hasson George, 12, was shot once in the chest inside the officerís Jersey City apartment Friday night. He was shot with a semiautomatic pistol issued to the corrections officer, Shaara Green-Simms, 38, who works at the county jail. Investigators have not ruled out that the shooting might have been an accident. DeFazio said Green-Simms is the 14-year-oldís mother and the boys have the same father.
