Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel is scheduled to conduct a private workout for the Browns on April 5 in Tallahassee, Fla., a league source confirmed today for the Beacon Journal.
Manuel is working out for the Philadelphia Eagles today and has another workout set Friday with the Cincinnati Bengals, the source said. He has previously worked out for the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars, the source said.
NFLDraftScout.com projects Manuel as a second-round selection in the draft, which runs April 25-27. The Browns have the sixth overall selection but no second-round pick because they forfeited it by choosing wide receiver Josh Gordon this past summer in the supplemental draft. However, itís possible they could get back into the second round in a trade-down scenario.
Manuel started all 14 games as a senior this past season, completing 263-of-387 passes (68 percent) for 3,392 yards and 23 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. During his career at Florida State, he compiled a record of 25-6 as a starter.
The 6-foot-5, 237-pound Manuel has exceptional size, speed and athletic ability for the position. He rushed for 310 yards and four touchdowns last season.
Last month at the NFL Scouting Combine, Manuel posted a time of 4.65 seconds in the 40-yard dash, finishing second among quarterbacks. West Virginiaís Geno Smith, the top-rated quarterback in the draft, ran the 40 in 4.59 seconds.
Manuel also finished first among quarterbacks in the vertical jump (34 inches), second in the broad jump (9 feet, 10 inches) and second in the 20-yard shuttle (4.21 seconds).
