Defending champion Schwartzel shot a second consecutive 4-under 68 on Friday to join Madsen at 8-under 136 at Leopard Creek in northern South Africa.
Denmarkís Madsen added a 71 to his opening-round 65 to stay on course for a second consecutive title. He overtook Schwartzel to win the South African Open on Sunday, the opening event on the tourís 2014 Race to Dubai.
