COLUMBIA, S.C.: Brenton Williams scored a season-high 24 points Saturday to lead South Carolina to a 78-42 rout of Akron in their second-straight game since Christmas Day, when they beat them 69-59 at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic.
The senior guard connected on 6 of 8 3-point attempts for his third-straight game in double figures.
The Gamecocks (5-6) blew open a close game with a 17-1 run to open the second half. The Zips (6-5) missed their first six shots of the half and suffered seven turnovers in the first 8 minutes to allow South Carolina to race to a 47-25 lead. Akron went 9:55 without a field goal until center Pat Forsythe broke the streak with a jumper with 11:51 remaining.
Forward Quincy Diggs led Akron with 13 points and five rebounds. Guard Deji Ibitayo scored eight points. Forsythe finished with six points and five rebounds.
