QUICK TAKE

"The Girl in the Spider's Web" hits theaters nationwide Friday.

New 'Tattoo': The drama is derived from Swedish author Stieg Larsson's popular Millennium series, but this is the first film not based on his original trilogy. (Larsson died in 2004.) Although journalist Mikael Blomkvist is ostensibly the star of the series, the most compelling character is radical computer hacker Lisbeth Salander.

Noomi and Rooney: Starting in 2009, Salander was played by Noomi Rapace in three Swedish films: "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "The Girl Who Played with Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest." In 2011, Hollywood took a crack at the series with a new "Dragon Tattoo" starring Rooney Mara as Salander and Daniel Craig as Blomkvist.

Foy's turn: For "Spider's Web," based on the book by David Lagercrantz, Claire Foy steps in as the feisty and resourceful Salander. Foy, who won acclaim for playing Queen Elizabeth II in two seasons of "The Crown," has already had a busy 2018. She starred in the scary thriller "Unsane," and can currently be seen playing Janet Armstrong in "First Man."
