Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday which celebrates family, community and culture and is celebrated from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1. It builds on the five fundamental activities of Continental African "first fruit" celebrations: in gathering; reverence; commemoration; recommitment and celebration. Thursday's event will mark Kujichagulia (Self Determination) at 6 p.m. at Mt Calvary Baptist Church,  442 Bell St. in Akron.

New in theaters: "Holmes and Watson” is a new take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic mysteries featuring Will Ferrell as Sherlock Holmes and John C. Reilly as Doctor Watson. It's showing at most area theaters.

Winter walk: There will be a Winter Wildlife stroll from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Tuscarawas Meadows Area, 2620 Harrington Road, in Akron. A Summit Metro Parks naturalist will point out which wildlife are out and about during the winter. Participants will have a chance to hand-feed a chickadee.
