Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant recently opened its first Northeast Ohio location in Orange, and it succeeds on both sides.

The menu is wide-ranging, offering a little of everything and influences from around the world. You can easily build a tapas-style meal for your table just from the appetizers ($9-$15) and flatbreads ($10-$13).

Three pages of entrees feature beef, pork, seafood, chicken, pasta and vegetarian options. Can’t decide? The “create your own surf and turf” allows you to choose from three red-meat and five seafood offerings for $29-$31. There are also plenty of salads, burgers and sandwiches. Vegan and gluten-free dishes are offered, along with a “Life Balance” menu of items under 600 calories.

Cooper’s Hawk serves only its own wine, but don’t worry, there’s something for everyone, with sweetness levels ranging from bone dry to luxurious dessert styles. You’ll find familiar grapes like cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, and some curve balls like viognier and gewurztraminer. You can request a sample before committing to a glass or bottle, or get a flight of four small pours to compare and contrast.

If you want to learn more about the wines (or are looking to pass the time while you wait for a table), there’s a tasting bar with three different sampling menus to choose from according to your preferences. The tasting sheets are terrific, each wine broken down in a mini-infographic that describes its flavors and characteristics and suggests food pairings. I tasted the higher-end “Lux” series and was impressed by the quality and complexity of the wines.

Cooper’s Hawk is in the new Pinecrest development at Interstate 271 and Harvard Road in Orange Village. See chwinery.com/locations/ohio/orange-village for more info or reservations.
