Don't let the seemingly endless construction on South Main Street in downtown Akron stop you from patronizing its businesses, such as the venerable Peanut Shoppe, the grilled cheese paradise of Lockview, the Jamaican cuisine of Pots and Pans and the relaxed hangout Baxter’s Bar.

If you’re headed to a show at the Akron Civic Theatre or an evening of ice skating at Lock 3, Baxter’s is a perfect place to grab a bite and a drink, right across the street from both venues. Plenty of craft beers are offered — 22 on draft and many more in bottles and cans — along with martinis and other cocktails.

The smallish menu is meant for sharing. Bar nuts are custom-made next door at the Peanut Shoppe, not dumped out of an industrial-size food service bag. Spinach and artichoke dip is heavy on the spinach and not overly rich. The margherita flatbread pizza doubles down on the tomatoes, with both marinara sauce and fresh slices, and a balsamic drizzle as a finishing touch.

The place: Baxter’s Bar, 205 S. Main St., Akron

Why you should go: Craft beer and shareable noshes
