QUICK TAKE

"Captive State" opens nationwide Friday.

Alien invasion: John Goodman stars as a detective in this sci-fi thriller set in Chicago 10 years after a massive alien invasion.

Mixed signals: Goodman's Det. Mulligan serves the alien rulers by keeping his fellow humans in line. But it's not clear what his true objectives are, or what the aliens are really after.

Wyatt's way: It was directed and co-written by British filmmaker Rupert Wyatt, who also gave us "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," "The Escapist" and "The Gambler" (which also featured Goodman). The cast includes Machine Gun Kelly, Ashton Sanders, Alan Ruck, Kiki Layne and Oscar-nominee Vera Farmiga.

TRENDING

"Triple Frontier"

The script sounds familiar — ex-Special Forces buddies reunite to take on a drug cartel in South America — but we hope the appealing cast, including Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam and Garrett Hedlund, can lend this action-thriller some verve. Now on Netflix, and in theaters in a few "select" cities (but not in Northeast Ohio).
