QUICK TAKE

"Ben-Hur" on the big screen.

60th anniversary: It's true. They really don't "make 'em like they used to." "Ben-Hur" was not such an anomaly when it was released in 1959. Theaters were jammed with lengthy movies in the 1950s and 1960s — sweeping screen sagas that ran for three hours or more. Charlton Heston starred in several of them.

Nine-minute race: Directed by William Wyler, "Ben-Hur" starred Heston, Jack Hawkins, Stephen Boyd and Haya Harareet. The story of a Jewish prince who is cast into slavery but rises again to take on the Romans is best remembered for its classic, nine-minute chariot race scene. The American Film Institute ranks it as the second best "epic" of all time, behind only "Lawrence of Arabia."

11 Oscars: This winner of 11 Academy Awards will be back in theaters (in wide-screen "Ultra 65" format) for four screenings: 1 and 6 p.m. Sunday and Wednesday. Old-school touches such as the overture (from Miklós Rózsa's score) and an intermission are included. For ticket information and a complete list of theaters: www.fathomevents.com.
