QUICK TAKE

"Dead to Me"

Grief partners: The new series starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini debuts Friday on Netflix. Applegate is Jen, who is described as "a sardonic widow determined to solve her husband’s recent hit-and-run murder." Cardellini is Judy, "an optimistic free spirit who’s recently suffered her own tragic loss." They meet at a support group and become unlikely friends. Much wine-drinking ensues.

Back to TV: Applegate shot to fame playing Kelly Bundy on "Married With Children" in the '80s and '90s. She has since earned acclaim for her roles in "Samantha Who?" and the "Anchorman" comedies. She also won an Emmy for a guest appearance on "Friends."

Dark comedy: "Dead to Me" is a dark comedy created by Liz Feldman ("2 Broke Girls"). It has received a mildly positive review in Variety: "The structure of the show, which leans hard on cliffhangers and the charm of its leads, keeps it zipping along ... but by the end, its persistent attempts to surprise us dulls the impact of its overall story."
