Authorities say Columbia Gas has agreed to compensate its customers for all losses related to a series of gas explosions and fires in Massachusetts’ Merrimack Valley.

Andover officials said Saturday the utility company will pay claims related to bodily injury, property damage, disruption of business and other inconveniences caused by loss of gas service.

The Sept. 13 disaster killed one person, injured some 25 others and damaged or destroyed dozens of homes and businesses.

Congress takes aim

at airplane legroom

The Federal Aviation Administration would be required to set new minimum requirements for seats on airplanes under legislation to be considered in the House this week, possibly giving passengers a break from ever-shrinking legroom and cramped quarters.

The regulation of seat width and legroom is part of a five-year extension of federal aviation programs announced early Saturday by Republican and Democratic leaders of the House and Senate committees that oversee the nation’s air travel.

Congress faces a Sept. 30 deadline to keep FAA programs running.

Police: Victim’s car

stolen after crash

Police say a Florida man was arrested after fatally striking a man who stopped to help a motorist on an interstate highway and then stealing the victim’s car.

The body of Dhimitri Andoni, 22, was discovered Friday along Interstate 275 in St. Petersburg about 15 hours after the accident.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Andoni stopped his car on the shoulder to assist another driver when he was struck by a pickup truck driven by Dana Thomas Byrd, 30. Byrd stole Andoni’s car, leaving his truck behind, and abandoned Andoni’s car at a parking lot, officials said.

Byrd was arrested Friday.
